Explanation

Krishna gives a clear metaphor: without the sun, objects are not visible; without consciousness, body and mind are not known. The knower illumines all experience.

Read the traditional commentary

Krishna offers his final and perhaps most beloved analogy of the chapter. As one sun lights up the entire world, so the single knower of the field (kshetri) illumines the whole field. The one consciousness reveals every body, every mind, every experience, just as one source of light makes all forms visible without dividing itself among them.

The image carries two profound suggestions. First, awareness is one, not many; the same light of consciousness shines in every being, as one sun serves countless eyes. Second, just as sunlight reveals all objects while remaining distinct from them and untouched by them, consciousness illumines all experience while remaining itself pure and unentangled.

We are not the changing scenes lit up within us; we are the light by which they are known. To rest as that knowing light — present, revealing, yet sovereign and free — is the quiet culmination toward which this entire chapter has been leading the seeker.
