Chapter 8, Verse 11

यदक्षरं वेदविदो वदन्ति विशन्ति यद्यतयो वीतरागाः | यदिच्छन्तो ब्रह्मचर्यं चरन्ति तत्ते पदं संग्रहेण प्रवक्ष्ये ||८-११||

yadakṣaraṃ vedavido vadanti viśanti yadyatayo vītarāgāḥ . yadicchanto brahmacaryaṃ caranti tatte padaṃ saṃgraheṇa pravakṣye ||8-11||

Meaning

8.11 That which is declared Imperishable by those who know the Vedas, that which the self-controlled (ascetics or Sannyasins) and passion-free enter, that desiring which celibacy is practised that goal I will declare to thee in brief.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna prepares to teach the actual technique of departure, first establishing the worthiness of the goal. The destination he will describe is the imperishable (akshara) that the knowers of the Veda extol, that the passion-free ascetics enter, and for the sake of which seekers undertake brahmacharya — the disciplined, sacred life.

By invoking these three witnesses — the wise, the renounced, and the disciplined — Krishna underscores how precious the goal is. It is not a minor attainment but the very aim toward which entire lives of austerity and study are directed. The mention of brahmacharya reminds us that this highest state is approached through self-restraint and the channeling of one's energies toward the Divine. Krishna's promise to explain it 'in brief' (sangrahena) is an act of grace: the supreme truth that ascetics spend lifetimes pursuing, he will distill for Arjuna in a few compassionate verses.

antakāle ca māmeva smaranmuktvā kalevaram . yaḥ prayāti sa madbhāvaṃ yāti nāstyatra saṃśayaḥ ||8-5||

8.5 And whosoever, leaving the body, goes forth remembering Me alone, at the time of death, he attains My Being: there is no doubt about this.

अभ्यासयोगयुक्तेन चेतसा नान्यगामिना | परमं पुरुषं दिव्यं याति पार्थानुचिन्तयन् ||८-८||

orsaṃśayama abhyāsayogayuktena cetasā nānyagāminā . paramaṃ puruṣaṃ divyaṃ yāti pārthānucintayan ||8-8||

8.8 With the mind not moving towards any other thing, made steadfast by the method of habitual meditation, and constantly meditating, one goes to the Supreme Person, the Resplendent, O Arjuna.
