Word-by-Word Meaning
Explanation & Commentary
Krishna gives the inner method of yoga-dharana, the concentration that prepares one for a conscious departure. The 'gates' (dvarani) are the senses — eyes, ears, and the rest — through which the mind ordinarily streams outward. The yogi first closes these gates, withdrawing attention from the external world. Then the mind is confined in the heart, and the life-breath (prana) is drawn upward and fixed in the head.
This is the practice of inward gathering. Our energy and attention normally leak out through the senses toward objects of desire; here they are deliberately collected and turned within. The closing of the gates is not suppression but redirection — the same powers, recalled from scattered pursuits and unified for a single sacred purpose. Though described as a technique for the moment of death, this discipline is the daily work of meditation: quieting the senses, settling the mind, and steadying the breath.
💡 Key Takeaway
Gather your scattered attention inward by quieting the senses and settling the mind in the heart, the daily heart of meditation.
