Chapter 8, Verse 8

अभ्यासयोगयुक्तेन चेतसा नान्यगामिना | परमं पुरुषं दिव्यं याति पार्थानुचिन्तयन् ||८-८||

orsaṃśayama abhyāsayogayuktena cetasā nānyagāminā . paramaṃ puruṣaṃ divyaṃ yāti pārthānucintayan ||8-8||

Meaning

8.8 With the mind not moving towards any other thing, made steadfast by the method of habitual meditation, and constantly meditating, one goes to the Supreme Person, the Resplendent, O Arjuna.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna now reveals the means by which steady remembrance becomes possible: abhyasa-yoga, the yoga of repeated practice. The mind cannot be steadied by a single act of will; it is trained gradually, through disciplined repetition, until it no longer wanders to other things (nanya-gamina).

The key word here is abhyasa — practice. Just as a skill is mastered through patient repetition, so the mind is taught to rest in the Divine by returning to it again and again, gently and persistently. Krishna is realistic: he does not expect the mind to be effortlessly fixed, but he assures Arjuna that constant meditation (anuchintayan) will carry the seeker to the Supreme, Resplendent Person. There is great encouragement in this for anyone who struggles with a restless mind. Steadiness is not a gift bestowed on a few; it is the fruit of faithful, daily practice that anyone can begin.

8.9 Whosoever meditates on the Omniscient, the Ancient, the Ruler (of the whole world), minuter than an atom, the supporter of all, of inconceivable form, effulgent like the sun and beyond the darkness of ignorance.

प्रयाणकाले मनसाऽचलेन भक्त्या युक्तो योगबलेन चैव | भ्रुवोर्मध्ये प्राणमावेश्य सम्यक् स तं परं पुरुषमुपैति दिव्यम् ||८-१०||

prayāṇakāle manasā.acalena bhaktyā yukto yogabalena caiva . bhruvormadhye prāṇamāveśya samyak sa taṃ paraṃ puruṣamupaiti divyam ||8-10||

8.10 At the time of death, with unshaken mind, endowed with devotio, by the power of Yoga, fixing the whole life-breath in the middle of the two eyrows, he reaches that resplendent Supreme Person.
