Chapter 8, Verse 9

कविं पुराणमनुशासितार- मणोरणीयंसमनुस्मरेद्यः | सर्वस्य धातारमचिन्त्यरूप- मादित्यवर्णं तमसः परस्तात् ||८-९||

kaviṃ purāṇamanuśāsitāraṃ aṇoraṇīyaṃsamanusmaredyaḥ . sarvasya dhātāramacintyarūpaṃ ādityavarṇaṃ tamasaḥ parastāt ||8-9||

Meaning

8.9 Whosoever meditates on the Omniscient, the Ancient, the Ruler (of the whole world), minuter than an atom, the supporter of all, of inconceivable form, effulgent like the sun and beyond the darkness of ignorance.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna now paints a portrait of the supreme object of meditation, gathering the great names by which sages have known the Divine. The Lord is the omniscient seer (kavi), the ancient one (purana) older than all beginnings, the ruler and inner guide (anushasitaram), subtler than the smallest atom yet the supporter of the whole universe (sarvasya dhataram).

These paradoxes are deliberate. The Divine is of 'inconceivable form' (achintya-rupam) — at once smaller than the smallest and vaster than the vastest, intimately near yet utterly transcendent. The imagery of light is especially powerful: 'luminous like the sun, beyond the darkness of ignorance' (tamasah parastat). Just as the sun dispels physical darkness, so meditation on this radiant reality dispels the inner darkness of confusion and fear. The verse gives the meditating mind something worthy to rest upon — not a vague feeling, but the conscious, sustaining, luminous source of all.

अभ्यासयोगयुक्तेन चेतसा नान्यगामिना | परमं पुरुषं दिव्यं याति पार्थानुचिन्तयन् ||८-८||

orsaṃśayama abhyāsayogayuktena cetasā nānyagāminā . paramaṃ puruṣaṃ divyaṃ yāti pārthānucintayan ||8-8||

8.8 With the mind not moving towards any other thing, made steadfast by the method of habitual meditation, and constantly meditating, one goes to the Supreme Person, the Resplendent, O Arjuna.
