Meaning
8.5 And whosoever, leaving the body, goes forth remembering Me alone, at the time of death, he attains My Being: there is no doubt about this.
Word-by-Word Meaning
Explanation & Commentary
Now Krishna answers Arjuna's question about the moment of death directly. Whoever departs from the body while remembering the Lord alone (mam eva smaran) attains the Lord's own being, madbhava. Krishna seals this promise with rare emphasis: nasty atra samshayah — 'there is no doubt about this.'
The principle is profound in its simplicity. The mind's final orientation reflects the soul's deepest love, and that love determines where consciousness travels next. But this is not a trick performed only at the last breath; the dying remembrance is the fruit of a lifetime of turning toward the Divine. What occupies the heart in ordinary moments is what naturally rises at the final one. Hence Krishna's assurance is also an invitation: build the habit of remembrance now, so that at the great departure it arises effortlessly and carries you home.
💡 Key Takeaway
Whatever you hold in your heart through life will rise in your final moment, so fill your days with what you most want to become.
