Explanation
Krishna does not reject material giving, but he places knowledge above it. Material offerings can help others and purify generosity, but knowledge transforms the root of bondage. When action is illumined by wisdom, it becomes complete.
Read the traditional commentary
Among all the sacrifices just described, Krishna now declares the highest: jñāna-yajña — the sacrifice of knowledge — is superior to any material offering (dravyamaya-yajña). Gifts of wealth, ritual substances, and outward observances are valuable, but the offering of wisdom surpasses them all, for it directly transforms the offerer.
The reason follows in a luminous phrase: sarvaṃ karma akhilaṃ jñāne parisamāpyate — 'all action, in its entirety, culminates in knowledge.' Every act of sacrifice, discipline, and effort ultimately exists to ripen into wisdom. Action is the means; knowledge is the end.
This verse marks a turning point in the chapter, lifting the discussion from the many forms of work toward their shared destination — the realization that liberates. All paths of doing converge in the path of knowing.
