Explanation
This verse reveals the relationship behind true teaching. Krishna does not give this wisdom mechanically. He gives it to Arjuna as a devotee and friend. Spiritual guidance becomes transformative when there is trust, love, and openness.
Read the traditional commentary
Krishna reveals why Arjuna, of all people, is being given this ancient teaching: bhakto'si me sakhā ca — 'you are My devotee and My friend.' The supreme secret (rahasyam uttamam) is not withheld by jealousy but entrusted to a heart that is both loving and intimate with the Lord. Qualification for the highest knowledge is not cleverness but devotion and trustworthy nearness.
Note the two relationships named together: devotion (bhakta) and friendship (sakhā). One bows in reverence, the other walks beside. True spiritual receptivity holds both — awe before the divine and an unguarded closeness to it. Krishna shares the secret not as a guarded doctrine but as one shares the deepest thing in one's heart with a beloved friend.
