Explanation

Tamas clouds clarity and reduces energy. It can appear as procrastination, numbness, confusion, avoidance, or careless living.

Read the traditional commentary

Krishna completes the triad with tamas, the heaviest guṇa, born of ajñāna — ignorance — and the great deluder of all embodied beings. Where sattva illumines and rajas drives, tamas darkens. It clouds discernment so that the soul cannot even see its own bondage.

Its three chains are vivid and familiar: pramāda (heedlessness and careless forgetting), ālasya (indolence that refuses effort), and nidrā (excessive sleep and dullness). These are not dramatic vices but quiet ones — the slow erosion of attention, the postponement of what matters, the sinking into stupor.

Tamas binds precisely because it numbs the very alarm that might wake us. Recognising its symptoms in oneself is the first act of resistance; by naming heedlessness and lethargy for what they are, the seeker begins to stir toward the light of sattva.
