Chapter 4, Verse 37

यथैधांसि समिद्धोऽग्निर्भस्मसात्कुरुतेऽर्जुन | ज्ञानाग्निः सर्वकर्माणि भस्मसात्कुरुते तथा ||४-३७||

yathaidhāṃsi samiddho.agnirbhasmasātkurute.arjuna . jñānāgniḥ sarvakarmāṇi bhasmasātkurute tathā ||4-37||

Meaning

4.37 As the blazing fire reduces fuel to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge reduce all actions to ashes.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna offers a vivid and memorable simile for the transformative power of wisdom. Just as a blazing fire (samiddho'gniḥ) turns a heap of firewood entirely to ash, so the fire of knowledge (jñāna-agni) consumes the binding force of all one's actions. The accumulated karma that would otherwise tie us to repeated birth is, as it were, incinerated by realization.

The metaphor is precise. Fire does not remove the wood by carrying it away; it transforms its very nature into ash that can bind nothing. Likewise, knowledge does not necessarily stop us from acting, but it burns away the egoic ignorance that makes action binding. Once 'I am the doer, I crave the fruit' is reduced to ashes, deeds lose their grip on the soul. This single image captures why the Gita esteems knowledge so highly: it is the purifying flame that frees.

वीतरागभयक्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिताः | बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागताः ||४-१०||

vītarāgabhayakrodhā manmayā māmupāśritāḥ . bahavo jñānatapasā pūtā madbhāvamāgatāḥ ||4-10||

4.10 Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained to My Being.
