Chapter 4, Verse 9

जन्म कर्म च मे दिव्यमेवं यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः | त्यक्त्वा देहं पुनर्जन्म नैति मामेति सोऽर्जुन ||४-९||

janma karma ca me divyamevaṃ yo vetti tattvataḥ . tyaktvā dehaṃ punarjanma naiti māmeti so.arjuna ||4-9||

Meaning

4.9 He who thus know, in their true light, My divine birth and action, having abandoned the body, is not born again, he comes to Me, O Arjuna.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna now reveals the fruit of truly understanding His divine nature. To know His birth and action as divya — divine, transcendent — tattvataḥ, in their real essence, is itself liberating. Such a person, on leaving the body, is freed from the cycle of rebirth and attains the Lord directly. Right knowledge of the divine is not abstract theology; it transforms one's destiny.

The word tattvataḥ is crucial: not a casual belief but a genuine, realized understanding. When we grasp that the divine acts in the world without being bound by it, we begin to learn how to act the same way — engaged yet free. This knowledge dissolves the deep ignorance that keeps us tethered to repeated birth, and unites the knower with the known.

4.6 Though I am unborn, of imperishable nature, and though I am the Lord of all beings, yet, governing My own Nature, I am born by My own Maya.

वीतरागभयक्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिताः | बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागताः ||४-१०||

vītarāgabhayakrodhā manmayā māmupāśritāḥ . bahavo jñānatapasā pūtā madbhāvamāgatāḥ ||4-10||

4.10 Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained to My Being.
