Chapter 18, Verse 20

सर्वभूतेषु येनैकं भावमव्ययमीक्षते | अविभक्तं विभक्तेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि सात्त्विकम् ||१८-२०||

sarvabhūteṣu yenaikaṃ bhāvamavyayamīkṣate . avibhaktaṃ vibhakteṣu tajjñānaṃ viddhi sāttvikam ||18-20||

Meaning

18.20 That by which one sees the one indestructible Reality in all beings, not separate in all the separate beings know thou that knowledge to be Sattvic.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna describes the highest knowledge first. Sattvic jnana is the vision that perceives one imperishable Reality present in all beings — avibhaktam vibhakteshu, undivided within the divided. Beneath the endless variety of forms it beholds a single, deathless presence.

This is the unitive vision of the realized sage. Where ordinary sight registers only separateness and difference, sattvic knowing sees the same Self shining through every creature. Such perception naturally dissolves hatred, comparison, and fear, for one cannot truly harm or envy what one recognizes as oneself. This seeing of unity-in-multiplicity is wisdom in its purest form.

na dveṣṭyakuśalaṃ karma kuśale nānuṣajjate . tyāgī sattvasamāviṣṭo medhāvī chinnasaṃśayaḥ ||18-10||

18.10 The man of renunciation, pervaded by purity, intelligent, and with his doubts cut asunder, does not hate a disagreeable work nor is he attached to an agreeable one.

ज्ञानं ज्ञेयं परिज्ञाता त्रिविधा कर्मचोदना | करणं कर्म कर्तेति त्रिविधः कर्मसंग्रहः ||१८-१८||

jñānaṃ jñeyaṃ parijñātā trividhā karmacodanā . karaṇaṃ karma karteti trividhaḥ karmasaṃgrahaḥ ||18-18||

18.18 Knowledge, the knowable and the knower form the threefold impulse to action; the organ, the action and the agent form the threefold basis of action.
