Meaning

18.18 Knowledge, the knowable and the knower form the threefold impulse to action; the organ, the action and the agent form the threefold basis of action.

Word-by-Word Meaning

ज्ञानंknowledge
ज्ञेयंthe knowable / object of knowledge
परिज्ञाताthe knower
त्रिविधा कर्मचोदनाthe threefold impulse to action
करणंthe instrument
कर्मthe action
कर्ताthe agent
इति त्रिविधः कर्मसंग्रहःthus the threefold basis of action

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna now offers an elegant anatomy of action. Every deed is set in motion by a threefold impulse — jnana (knowledge), jneya (the thing to be known), and parijnata (the knower). And every deed is carried out through a threefold basis — karana (the instrument), karma (the act itself), and karta (the agent).

This precise analysis is not dry philosophy but a tool for freedom. By seeing action broken into its parts, the seeker stops identifying blindly with 'I am simply doing this.' Understanding the components — what prompts action and what executes it — loosens the ego's automatic grip and prepares the way for the threefold classification by guna that follows.

💡 Key Takeaway

Seeing the parts that make up any action loosens the ego's blind identification with being the doer.
