Explanation & Commentary

Having exalted the sacrifice of knowledge, Krishna now shows how to obtain it. The method is threefold: praṇipāta — humble surrender and reverence; paripraśna — sincere, searching inquiry; and sevā — devoted service. One cannot seize wisdom by arrogance or idle curiosity; it is received by those who approach the teacher with humility, honest questioning, and a serving heart.

Note the balance Krishna prescribes. Mere submission without inquiry breeds blind faith; mere questioning without humility breeds argument; service grounds them both in genuine love. The true teachers are the tattva-darśinaḥ — those who have actually seen the truth, not merely read about it. From such realized souls, knowledge is transmitted as a living flame. This verse is the timeless charter of the teacher-disciple relationship, valuing humility and sincerity above cleverness.

💡 Key Takeaway

Wisdom is earned through humility, sincere questioning, and service — approach those who have truly realized the truth.
