Chapter 3, Verse 9

यज्ञार्थात्कर्मणोऽन्यत्र लोकोऽयं कर्मबन्धनः | तदर्थं कर्म कौन्तेय मुक्तसङ्गः समाचर ||३-९||

yajñārthātkarmaṇo.anyatra loko.ayaṃ karmabandhanaḥ . tadarthaṃ karma kaunteya muktasaṅgaḥ samācara ||3-9||

Meaning

3.9 The world is bound by actions other than those performed for the sake of sacrifice; do thou, therefore, O son of Kunti (Arjuna), perform action for that sake (for sacrifice alone), free from attachment.

Explanation & Commentary

Here Krishna introduces the transforming key: yajna, sacrifice. Action done in the spirit of offering — performed as a sacred gift rather than for personal gain — does not bind the soul. All other action, driven by self-interest, weaves the chains of karma that keep us turning in the world.

Yajna is far wider than ritual fire; it is the attitude of dedicating one's work to something greater than the ego. When effort is offered up, mukta-sanga — freedom from attachment — naturally follows, and the same deed that would normally bind becomes liberating. This is the secret answer to Arjuna's dilemma: he need not abandon action; he must transmute it. The very fight he dreads, performed as sacred duty without clinging, becomes a path to freedom rather than bondage.

3.3 The Blessed Lord said In this world there is a twofold path, as I said before, O sinless one; the path of knowledge of the Sankhyas and the path of action of the Yogins.

न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते | न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति ||३-४||

na karmaṇāmanārambhānnaiṣkarmyaṃ puruṣo.aśnute . na ca saṃnyasanādeva siddhiṃ samadhigacchati ||3-4||

3.4 Not by non-performance of actions does man reach actionlessness; nor by mere renunciation does he attain to perfection.
