Chapter 3, Verse 41

तस्मात्त्वमिन्द्रियाण्यादौ नियम्य भरतर्षभ | पाप्मानं प्रजहि ह्येनं ज्ञानविज्ञाननाशनम् ||३-४१||

tasmāttvamindriyāṇyādau niyamya bharatarṣabha . pāpmānaṃ prajahi hyenaṃ jñānavijñānanāśanam ||3-41||

Meaning

3.41 Therefore, O best of the Bharatas (Arjuna), controlling the senses first, do thou kill this sinful thing, the destroyer of knowledge and realisation.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna issues the strategic command. Since desire takes its seat first in the senses, the campaign against it must begin there: indriyani adau niyamya — control the senses at the very outset. Then slay this enemy, the destroyer of jnana (knowledge) and vijnana (realized wisdom).

The order is deliberate and wise. Desire is most easily checked at its earliest, outermost stage — in the senses — before it grows in the mind and corrupts the intellect. To wait until craving has captured one's reasoning is to fight at a far greater disadvantage. This is the practical art of self-mastery: intercept the impulse early, at the gateway of the senses, rather than wrestling with a full-blown obsession. Krishna frames it as nothing less than a battle, for desire wages constant war on our highest faculties. Beginning the defense at the senses is the most winnable front.

3.3 The Blessed Lord said In this world there is a twofold path, as I said before, O sinless one; the path of knowledge of the Sankhyas and the path of action of the Yogins.

कर्मेन्द्रियाणि संयम्य य आस्ते मनसा स्मरन् | इन्द्रियार्थान्विमूढात्मा मिथ्याचारः स उच्यते ||३-६||

karmendriyāṇi saṃyamya ya āste manasā smaran . indriyārthānvimūḍhātmā mithyācāraḥ sa ucyate ||3-6||

3.6 He who, restraining the organs of action, sits thinking of the sense-objects in mind, he of deluded understanding is called a hypocrite.

यस्त्विन्द्रियाणि मनसा नियम्यारभतेऽर्जुन | कर्मेन्द्रियैः कर्मयोगमसक्तः स विशिष्यते ||३-७||

yastvindriyāṇi manasā niyamyārabhate.arjuna . karmendriyaiḥ karmayogamasaktaḥ sa viśiṣyate ||3-7||

3.7 But whosoever, controlling the senses by the mind, O Arjuna, engages himself in Karma Yoga with the organs of action, without attachment, he excels.
