Chapter 18, Verse 30

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च कार्याकार्ये भयाभये | बन्धं मोक्षं च या वेत्ति बुद्धिः सा पार्थ सात्त्विकी ||१८-३०||

pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca kāryākārye bhayābhaye . bandhaṃ mokṣaṃ ca yā vetti buddhiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī ||18-30||

Meaning

18.30 The intellect which knows the path of work and renunciation, what ought to be done and what ought not to be done, fear and fearlessness, bondage and liberation that intellect is Sattvic (pure), O Arjuna.

Explanation & Commentary

Sattvic buddhi is the clear, discerning intellect that rightly knows the great pairs of life: when to engage (pravritti) and when to withdraw (nivritti), what ought and ought not to be done, when to fear and when to be fearless, and above all what binds the soul and what liberates it.

This is wisdom in its most practical form — not abstract cleverness but sound discrimination in the actual choices that shape a life. The sattvic mind sees clearly through the fog of impulse and confusion and chooses the path of dharma and freedom. Such discernment is the inner compass without which even sincere effort can wander into bondage.

18.4 Hear from Me the conclusion or the final truth about this abandonment, O best of the Bharatas; abandonment, verily, O best of men, has been declared to be of three kinds.

कार्यमित्येव यत्कर्म नियतं क्रियतेऽर्जुन | सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलं चैव स त्यागः सात्त्विको मतः ||१८-९||

kāryamityeva yatkarma niyataṃ kriyate.arjuna . saṅgaṃ tyaktvā phalaṃ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ ||18-9||

18.9 Whatever obligatory action is done, O Arjuna, merely because it ought to be done, abandoning attachment and also the desire for reward, that renunciation is regarded as Sattvic (pure).
