12.5 Greater is their trouble whose minds are set on the unmanifested; for the goal; the unmanifested, is very hard for the embodied to reach.
Word-by-Word Meaning
Explanation & Commentary
Krishna now states plainly why He recommends the path of personal devotion. The seekers of the unmanifested (avyakta) face greater hardship (kleśo adhikataraḥ), because a goal that has no form is exceedingly difficult for those who are themselves embodied (deha-vadbhiḥ) to grasp. We live through a body and mind that naturally cling to forms, names, and qualities; to rest the attention upon something utterly formless strains against our very condition.
This is not a condemnation of the path but a compassionate realism. For the soul still identified with the body, loving worship of a personal Lord offers a gentler, more natural ascent toward the same truth.
💡 Key Takeaway
For embodied beings, the formless path is harder; loving devotion to a personal God is the gentler road.
