Chapter 11, Verse 20

द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमन्तरं हि व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वाः | दृष्ट्वाद्भुतं रूपमुग्रं तवेदं लोकत्रयं प्रव्यथितं महात्मन् ||११-२०||

dyāvāpṛthivyoridamantaraṃ hi vyāptaṃ tvayaikena diśaśca sarvāḥ . dṛṣṭvādbhutaṃ rūpamugraṃ tavedaṃ lokatrayaṃ pravyathitaṃ mahātman ||11-20||

Meaning

11.20 This space between the earth and the heaven and all the arters are filled by Thee alone; having seen this, Thy wonderful and teriible form, the three worlds are trembling with fear, O great-souled Being.

Explanation & Commentary

The whole expanse between heaven and earth, and all the directions of space, are vyaptam — pervaded by Krishna alone. There is no gap the Divine does not fill. And now, for the first time, a decisive word enters Arjuna's speech: ugram, terrible. The form is adbhutam, wonderful, but also fearsome, and at the sight of it loka-trayam pravyathitam — the three worlds tremble.

This is the great turning of the chapter. What began as wonder now shades into dread. Arjuna realises he is not the only one shaken; all of creation quakes before this revelation. The all-pervading presence that fills every corner of space is not a comfortable abstraction but a living, overwhelming reality. The vision teaches that genuine encounter with the Infinite includes awe in its older sense — not mild admiration, but a trembling recognition of a power utterly beyond our scale.

11.6 Behold the Adityas, the Vasus, the Rudras, the two Asvins and also the Maruts; behold many wonders never seen before, O Arjuna.

इहैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं पश्याद्य सचराचरम् | मम देहे गुडाकेश यच्चान्यद् द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ||११-७||

ihaikasthaṃ jagatkṛtsnaṃ paśyādya sacarācaram . mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyad draṣṭumicchasi ||11-7||

11.7 Now behold, O Arjuna, in this, My body, the whole universe centred in one including the moving and the unmoving and whatever else thou desirest to see.
