Festival overview

Buddha Purnima commemorates the three central events of the Buddha's life — his birth in Lumbini, his enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya, and his mahaparinirvana (passing) at Kushinagar — all traditionally said to have occurred on the same Vaishakha full moon. In the Hindu Dashavatara tradition, Buddha is counted among Vishnu's ten principal avatars.

History & origin

Prince Siddhartha Gautama renounced his royal life in search of the cause of suffering, attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya after years of austerity and meditation, delivered his first sermon at Sarnath, and passed into mahaparinirvana at Kushinagar decades later — three milestones the tradition folds into a single day of remembrance.

Spiritual significance

The day centres on the Middle Path — a life lived between indulgence and harsh austerity — and on karuna (compassion) and ahimsa (non-violence) as the fruit of true understanding.

Religious significance

Observed at Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar and Lumbini, and by Buddhist and Hindu communities across Asia, with prayers, processions, meditation and charity (dana).

Rituals & how it is observed

  • Visit a Buddhist temple or stupa for prayers
  • Offer white flowers, light lamps and burn incense
  • Practice meditation and observe silence for part of the day
  • Read from the Dhammapada or recount the Buddha's life and teachings
  • Feed the poor and practice charity (dana)

Do

  • Practice ahimsa (non-violence) especially strictly today
  • Meditate or sit in silence
  • Give charity to those in need
  • Reflect on the Four Noble Truths

Avoid

  • Avoid violence to any living being, including insects
  • Avoid indulgence, excess or anger

Fasting guidelines

A simple, often meat-free satvik fast is kept by many devotees, broken with a modest meal; the emphasis is on restraint and reflection rather than strict abstinence.

Always consult a doctor before keeping a strict or waterless (nirjala) fast, especially if you have a health condition.

Bhagavad Gita teachings for Buddha Purnima (Buddha Jayanti)

The Buddha's Middle Path — action without craving or aversion — closely mirrors the Gita's own teaching of nishkama karma, performing one's duty with equanimity, unmoved by success or failure. In the Puranic list of avatars, Buddha's appearance echoes Krishna's own promise to descend whenever dharma needs restoring.

Perform your duty equipoised, O Arjuna, abandoning all attachment to success or failure. Such equanimity is called yoga.
Bhagavad Gita 2.48
One who is not envious but is a kind friend to all living beings, free from the false ego of proprietorship, equal in happiness and distress, and forgiving — such a devotee is very dear to Me.
Bhagavad Gita 12.13
