भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च | अहंकार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ||७-४||
bhūmirāpo.analo vāyuḥ khaṃ mano buddhireva ca . ahaṃkāra itīyaṃ me bhinnā prakṛtiraṣṭadhā ||7-4||

Here Krishna begins the great teaching on prakriti, His material Nature. He enumerates eight divisions: the five gross elements — earth, water, fire, air, ether — together with the three inner instruments of mind (manas), intellect (buddhi), and ego (ahamkara). Significantly, even mind and intellect are classed as material; they are subtle, but still part of the manifest world, not the conscious Self.
This is a profound clarification. We tend to identify with our thoughts and reasoning, taking the intellect as 'who we are.' Krishna gently corrects this: all eight are aspects of His lower Nature, the field within which life unfolds. By naming them as 'My Nature,' He also affirms that nothing in creation is separate from the Divine. The cosmos is not foreign matter but the expressed energy of God.

7.6 Know that these two (Natures) are the womb of all beings. So I am the source and dissolution of the whole universe.
ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये | मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि ||७-१२||
ye caiva sāttvikā bhāvā rājasāstāmasāśca ye . matta eveti tānviddhi na tvahaṃ teṣu te mayi ||7-12||
7.12 Whatever beings (and objects) that are pure, active and inert, know that they proceed from Me. They are in Me, yet I am not in them.
