यतो यतो निश्चरति मनश्चञ्चलमस्थिरम् | ततस्ततो नियम्यैतदात्मन्येव वशं नयेत् ||६-२६||

yato yato niścarati manaścañcalamasthiram . tatastato niyamyaitadātmanyeva vaśaṃ nayet ||6-26||

Meaning

6.26 From whatever cause the restless and unsteady mind wanders away, from that let him restrain it and bring it under the control of the Self alone.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna gives the single most practical instruction in all of meditation, anticipating that the mind will wander again and again. It is chanchala and asthira — restless and unsteady — by nature, and it will dart away toward this object or that. He does not pretend otherwise. Instead he prescribes the technique: yatah yatah... tatah tatah — 'from wherever it wanders, from there bring it back.'

The genius of this teaching is its endless patience and lack of judgment. There is no scolding the mind for straying, no despair at the hundredth distraction. There is only the gentle, repeated act of noticing the wandering and leading the mind back into the Self's control. This is the whole secret of practice. Every meditator across the centuries has discovered that the path is not a single conquest but this tireless return, performed without frustration, each time bringing the mind a little more firmly home.

6.10 Let the Yogi try constantly to keep the mind steady, remaining in solitude, alone, with the mind and the body controlled, and free from hope and covetousness.

शुचौ देशे प्रतिष्ठाप्य स्थिरमासनमात्मनः | नात्युच्छ्रितं नातिनीचं चैलाजिनकुशोत्तरम् ||६-११||

śucau deśe pratiṣṭhāpya sthiramāsanamātmanaḥ . nātyucchritaṃ nātinīcaṃ cailājinakuśottaram ||6-11||

6.11 In a clean spot, having established a firm seat of his own, neither too high nor too low, made of a cloth, a skin and Kusa-grass, one over the other.
