Chapter 4, Verse 41

योगसंन्यस्तकर्माणं ज्ञानसञ्छिन्नसंशयम् | आत्मवन्तं न कर्माणि निबध्नन्ति धनञ्जय ||४-४१||

yogasaṃnyastakarmāṇaṃ jñānasañchinnasaṃśayam . ātmavantaṃ na karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya ||4-41||

Meaning

4.41 He who has renounced actions by Yoga, whose doubts are rent asunder by knowledge, and who is self-possessed actions do not bind him, O Arjuna.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna draws together the two great themes of the chapter — action and knowledge — into a single liberated figure. This person has yoga-saṃnyasta-karma: through karma-yoga he has renounced not action itself but his attachment to it, offering all deeds rather than clinging to them. His doubts have been jñāna-sañchinna — severed cleanly by the sword of knowledge. And he is ātmavān — firmly established in the Self.

For such a one, na karmāṇi nibadhnanti — actions simply do not bind. He has combined the path of selfless action with the clarity of wisdom, and the result is perfect freedom in the midst of activity. This verse beautifully resolves the apparent tension between work and renunciation: the truly free are not those who flee action, but those who act with detachment and unwavering self-knowledge. Both yoga and jñāna are needed, and together they liberate.

4.9 He who thus know, in their true light, My divine birth and action, having abandoned the body, is not born again, he comes to Me, O Arjuna.

वीतरागभयक्रोधा मन्मया मामुपाश्रिताः | बहवो ज्ञानतपसा पूता मद्भावमागताः ||४-१०||

vītarāgabhayakrodhā manmayā māmupāśritāḥ . bahavo jñānatapasā pūtā madbhāvamāgatāḥ ||4-10||

4.10 Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained to My Being.
