Chapter 4, Verse 27

सर्वाणीन्द्रियकर्माणि प्राणकर्माणि चापरे | आत्मसंयमयोगाग्नौ जुह्वति ज्ञानदीपिते ||४-२७||

sarvāṇīndriyakarmāṇi prāṇakarmāṇi cāpare . ātmasaṃyamayogāgnau juhvati jñānadīpite ||4-27||

Meaning

4.27 Others again sacrifice all the functions of the senses and those of the breath (vital energy or Prana) in the fire of the Yoga of self-restraint kindled by knowledge.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna describes a still more inward and complete sacrifice. Here the yogi offers not just individual senses but all the activities of the senses and even the functions of prāṇa — the vital life-energy — into the fire of ātma-saṃyama-yoga, the yoga of self-restraint. This points to the deep practices of meditation in which the whole apparatus of body and mind is stilled and turned within.

Crucially, this fire is jñāna-dīpita — kindled by knowledge. Mere mechanical suppression of the senses is not the aim; it is restraint illumined and guided by wisdom. Knowledge is the flame that gives the sacrifice its transforming power. This verse describes the contemplative who, through enlightened discipline, offers his entire active nature into stillness, allowing the deeper Self to shine through the quieted instruments of perception and life.

4.10 Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained to My Being.

किं कर्म किमकर्मेति कवयोऽप्यत्र मोहिताः | तत्ते कर्म प्रवक्ष्यामि यज्ज्ञात्वा मोक्ष्यसेऽशुभात् ||४-१६||

kiṃ karma kimakarmeti kavayo.apyatra mohitāḥ . tatte karma pravakṣyāmi yajjñātvā mokṣyase.aśubhāt ||4-16||

4.16 What is action? What is inaction? As to this even the wise are confused. Therefore I shall teach thee such action (the nature of action and inaction) by knowing which thou shalt be liberated from the evil (of Samsara, the wheel of birth and death).
