Chapter 4, Verse 18
कर्मण्यकर्म यः पश्येदकर्मणि च कर्म यः | स बुद्धिमान्मनुष्येषु स युक्तः कृत्स्नकर्मकृत् ||४-१८||
karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśyedakarmaṇi ca karma yaḥ . sa buddhimānmanuṣyeṣu sa yuktaḥ kṛtsnakarmakṛt ||4-18||
Meaning
4.18 He who seeth inaction in action and action in inaction, he is wise among men; he is a Yogi and performer of all actions.
Word-by-Word Meaning
Explanation & Commentary
This is the famous paradox that resolves the entire puzzle of action. The truly wise one 'sees inaction in action' — recognizing that one who acts without attachment to results is, in the deepest sense, not the doer at all; and 'action in inaction' — seeing that mere physical withdrawal, if the mind still churns with desire, is not real renunciation. Outer form and inner reality can diverge completely.
Such a person, Krishna says, is buddhimān — wise among men — and yuktaḥ, established in Yoga, even while performing all actions (kṛtsna-karma-kṛt). This is the liberated stance: fully engaged in the world's work, yet inwardly free and unmoved. The body acts; the soul rests. To see this clearly is to hold the secret of acting without bondage, the perfect union of activity and peace.
💡 Key Takeaway
The wise see freedom within their activity and recognize that stillness with a restless mind is not true rest.
