Chapter 4, Verse 17

कर्मणो ह्यपि बोद्धव्यं बोद्धव्यं च विकर्मणः | अकर्मणश्च बोद्धव्यं गहना कर्मणो गतिः ||४-१७||

karmaṇo hyapi boddhavyaṃ boddhavyaṃ ca vikarmaṇaḥ . akarmaṇaśca boddhavyaṃ gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ ||4-17||

Meaning

4.17 For verily (the true nature) of action (enjoined by the scriptures) should be known, also (that) of forbidden (or unlawful) action, and of inaction; hard to understand is the nature (path) of action.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna refines the inquiry into three categories that must each be understood: karma — right action prescribed by dharma; vikarma — wrong or forbidden action; and akarma — inaction. Wisdom requires discerning not just whether we are acting, but the quality and character of what we do. Not all action is the same; not all stillness is virtue.

The verse ends with a memorable admission: gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ — 'unfathomable is the way of action.' The moral and spiritual consequences of our deeds run deeper than the eye can follow. This humility before the complexity of action is itself instructive. It warns us against simplistic judgments and invites careful discrimination. Before we can act freely, we must learn to see clearly what kind of action we are truly engaged in.

4.2 This, handed down thus in regular succession, the royal sages knew. This Yoga, by long lapse of time, has been lost here, O Parantapa (burner of the foes).

यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत | अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ||४-७||

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānirbhavati bhārata . abhyutthānamadharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmyaham ||4-7||

4.7 Whenever there is decline of righteousness, O Arjuna, and rise of unrighteousness, then I manifest Myself.
