Chapter 3, Verse 20

कर्मणैव हि संसिद्धिमास्थिता जनकादयः | लोकसंग्रहमेवापि सम्पश्यन्कर्तुमर्हसि ||३-२०||

karmaṇaiva hi saṃsiddhimāsthitā janakādayaḥ . lokasaṃgrahamevāpi sampaśyankartumarhasi ||3-20||

Meaning

3.20 Janaka and others attained perfection verily by action only; even with a view to the protection of the masses thou shouldst perform action.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna grounds his teaching in living example. King Janaka and other great sovereigns reached samsiddhi, the highest perfection, through action alone — not by abandoning the world but by serving it faithfully even while inwardly free. The royal sage ruled, judged, and fought, yet remained liberated within.

Then Krishna introduces a crucial new motive: lokasangraha, the holding together and welfare of the world. Arjuna should act not only for his own liberation but for the good of all, to protect the social and moral order. Here the spiritual path turns outward into responsibility. Withdrawal would serve only the self; engaged, selfless action serves the whole community. The truly wise do not flee the world to be free; they remain within it, free and serving, becoming pillars upon which the well-being of others rests.

3.1 Arjuna said If Thou thinkest that knowledge is superior to action, O Krishna, why then, O Kesava, dost Thou ask me to engage in this terrible action?

श्रीभगवानुवाच | लोकेऽस्मिन् द्विविधा निष्ठा पुरा प्रोक्ता मयानघ | ज्ञानयोगेन साङ्ख्यानां कर्मयोगेन योगिनाम् ||३-३||

śrībhagavānuvāca . loke.asmina dvividhā niṣṭhā purā proktā mayānagha . jñānayogena sāṅkhyānāṃ karmayogena yoginām ||3-3||

3.3 The Blessed Lord said In this world there is a twofold path, as I said before, O sinless one; the path of knowledge of the Sankhyas and the path of action of the Yogins.

न कर्मणामनारम्भान्नैष्कर्म्यं पुरुषोऽश्नुते | न च संन्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति ||३-४||

na karmaṇāmanārambhānnaiṣkarmyaṃ puruṣo.aśnute . na ca saṃnyasanādeva siddhiṃ samadhigacchati ||3-4||

3.4 Not by non-performance of actions does man reach actionlessness; nor by mere renunciation does he attain to perfection.
