Chapter 14, Verse 14

यदा सत्त्वे प्रवृद्धे तु प्रलयं याति देहभृत् | तदोत्तमविदां लोकानमलान्प्रतिपद्यते ||१४-१४||

yadā sattve pravṛddhe tu pralayaṃ yāti dehabhṛt . tadottamavidāṃ lokānamalānpratipadyate ||14-14||

14.14 If the embodied one meets with death when Sattva is predominant, then he attains to the spotless worlds of the knowers of the Highest.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna now extends the teaching of the guṇas beyond this life, showing how one's dominant quality at the moment of death shapes one's onward destiny. If the soul departs while sattva prevails — in clarity, peace, and wisdom — it ascends to the amala lokān, the spotless, pure worlds inhabited by those who know the Highest.

This carries a quiet urgency for daily life. The state in which we die is not random; it tends to reflect the state in which we have habitually lived. A life cultivated in sattva ripens into a sattvic departure, just as a single day spent in clarity tends to end in peace. The Gita's counsel is therefore not to wait for some final moment but to nurture sattva continually, so that purity becomes our resting tone. As we live, so we tend to leave; as we leave, so we go onward.

rajo rāgātmakaṃ viddhi tṛṣṇāsaṅgasamudbhavam . tannibadhnāti kaunteya karmasaṅgena dehinam ||14-7||

14.7 Know thou Rajas to be of the nature of passion, the source of thirst (for sensual enjoyment) and attachment; it binds fast, O Arjuna, the embodied one by attachment to action.
