Chapter 11, Verse 53

नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया | शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुं दृष्टवानसि मां यथा ||११-५३||

nāhaṃ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā . śakya evaṃvidho draṣṭuṃ dṛṣṭavānasi māṃ yathā ||11-53||

Meaning

11.53 Neither by the Vedas nor by austerity, nor by gift, nor by sacrifice can I be seen in this form as thou hast seen Me (so easily).

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna repeats and sharpens the teaching of verse 48. Not by the Vedas, not by austerity, not by charity, not by ritual sacrifice can He be seen evam-vidhah — in this cosmic form. The most revered means of the spiritual life, though valuable, are powerless on their own to grant such a direct vision of the Supreme.

The repetition is deliberate and important. Krishna is preparing the ground for the single revelation that follows. By emphatically setting aside even the noblest external practices, He clears away every assumption that realization can be achieved by technique, accumulation, or effort alone. This is a humbling truth that the ego resists: no amount of doing can, by itself, command the vision of the Divine. Yet the verse is not despairing; it is pointing. Having shown what does not finally suffice, Krishna is about to disclose the one thing that does. The seeker is being led, step by step, away from reliance on works toward the deeper secret of the heart.

11.3 (Now) O Supreme Lord, as Thou hast thus described Thyself, O Supreme Person, I wish to see Thy divine form.

मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो | योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम् ||११-४||

manyase yadi tacchakyaṃ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho . yogeśvara tato me tvaṃ darśayātmānamavyayam ||11-4||

11.4 If Thou, O Lord, thinkest it possible for me to see it, do Thou, then, O Lord of the Yogins, show me Thy imperishable Self.
