न वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैर्न दानैर्- न च क्रियाभिर्न तपोभिरुग्रैः | एवंरूपः शक्य अहं नृलोके द्रष्टुं त्वदन्येन कुरुप्रवीर ||११-४८||
na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānaira- na ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ . evaṃrūpaḥ śakya ahaṃ nṛloke draṣṭuṃ tvadanyena kurupravīra ||11-48||

11.48 Neither by the study of the Vedas and sacrifices, nor by gifts nor by rituals nor by severe austerities can I be seen in this form in the world of men by any other than thyself, O great hero of the Kurus (Arjuna).

Krishna now lists the great spiritual disciplines of the tradition — Vedic study, sacrifices, charity, ritual works, and even the most severe austerities — and declares that not one of them, by itself, can grant this vision of the cosmic form. The most demanding human efforts, however worthy, cannot of their own power compel the Divine to reveal itself.
The phrase na tapobhih ugraih — 'not even by fierce austerities' — is striking. Practices that the world holds in highest esteem are insufficient on their own. The point is not that these disciplines are worthless, but that the supreme vision is finally a matter of grace, beyond what any technique can produce. This is a humbling and liberating truth. 11.5 The Blessed Lord said Behold, O Arjuna, forms of Mine, by the hundreds and thousands, of different sorts, divine, and of various colours and shapes.
