कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्माः सनातनाः। धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत।।

When a family is destroyed, the eternal family traditions (dharmas) perish; and when dharma is lost, the entire family is overcome by adharma.

Arjuna now makes his most serious argument: the destruction of a family does not end with the warriors' deaths — it destroys the cultural and spiritual heritage that was kept alive through the family's living practice. Family dharma (kula-dharma) includes ancestral rites, ethical traditions, and the transmission of wisdom from generation to generation. When the family is annihilated, this living continuity is severed.
This is a genuine concern and one the Gita takes seriously. The preservation of dharmic tradition through family and community structures is indeed crucial to civilisation. But Arjuna's application of this principle contains an irony: the Pandavas are fighting precisely because Duryodhana's actions have already begun destroying the dharmic fabric of the family and kingdom. The kula-dharma is already being destroyed by the very adharma that Arjuna is being asked to oppose.
The deeper principle embedded here is important for any age: when we abandon our responsibility to uphold dharma in order to preserve the form of family or institution, we often lose both. Genuine preservation of tradition requires the courage to defend the values at its core, not merely its external structures.

Sanjaya said: Having seen the army of the Pandavas arrayed in battle formation, King Duryodhana then approached his teacher Drona and spoke these words.
पश्यैतां पाण्डुपुत्राणामाचार्य महतीं चमूम्। व्यूढां द्रुपदपुत्रेण तव शिष्येण धीमता।।
paśyaitāṁ pāṇḍu-putrāṇām ācārya mahatīṁ camūm vyūḍhāṁ drupada-putreṇa tava śiṣyeṇa dhīmatā
O teacher, behold this mighty army of the sons of Pandu, so skilfully arrayed by the son of Drupada — your own talented student.
