Word-by-Word Meaning
Explanation & Commentary
Krishna corrects a subtle but common misunderstanding. The undiscerning suppose that the Divine, originally formless and unmanifest (avyakta), has merely 'become' the limited human form they see before them — as though God were contained and exhausted by the body of Krishna. They mistake the visible appearance for the whole reality, not knowing His supreme, immutable nature.
The teaching guards against shrinking the Infinite to the finite. When the Boundless takes a form to be near us, the form is a grace, not a limit; the unmanifest fullness is never diminished by appearing. We make the same error whenever we reduce the sacred to our small concept of it — our image, our doctrine, our experience. The Gita asks us to hold our forms of God reverently while remembering that He is always immeasurably more than any form can show.
💡 Key Takeaway
Never shrink the Infinite to your image of it — when the Boundless takes a form, its fullness is never diminished.
