Word-by-Word Meaning
Explanation & Commentary
Krishna describes the spirit in which the yogi works. With body, mind, intellect, and senses — every instrument at their disposal — they remain active, but always sangam tyaktva, with attachment released. Their motive is not personal gain but atma-shuddhi, the purification of the self.
This reframes the entire purpose of action. For the ordinary person, work aims at acquiring, enjoying, or protecting. For the yogi, work becomes a spiritual discipline whose fruit is an ever-cleaner heart. Significantly, the body and senses are now offered as instruments of growth rather than tools of indulgence. When the goal of every effort is inner refinement rather than outer reward, the very same activities that once bound now liberate. Action, performed without grasping, becomes a steady fire that burns away impurity.
💡 Key Takeaway
Let your work aim at inner purification, not personal gain — then every effort becomes spiritual practice.
