Chapter 17, Verse 16

मनः प्रसादः सौम्यत्वं मौनमात्मविनिग्रहः | भावसंशुद्धिरित्येतत्तपो मानसमुच्यते ||१७-१६||

manaḥ prasādaḥ saumyatvaṃ maunamātmavinigrahaḥ . bhāvasaṃśuddhirityetattapo mānasamucyate ||17-16||

17.16 Serenity of mind, good-heartedness, self-control, purity of nature this is called mental austerity.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna completes the threefold austerity by turning inward to the mind. Mental tapas (manasa tapa) is composed of manah-prasada (serenity and cheerfulness of mind), saumyatvam (gentleness and kindness), mauna (inner silence), atma-vinigraha (self-mastery), and bhava-samshuddhi (purity of one's deepest intentions). This is the subtlest and most powerful discipline, for the mind is the source from which speech and action spring.

Notably, this austerity is not about strain or suppression. Its first quality is serenity, its second gentleness — peace and kindness, not grimness. The 'silence' here is as much the quieting of inner noise as the holding of the tongue. By cultivating a calm, kind, well-governed mind whose motives are pure, a person purifies the wellspring of all conduct. Krishna implies that without inner serenity, outer disciplines remain incomplete; the truest austerity is a heart made clear.

अशास्त्रविहितं घोरं तप्यन्ते ये तपो जनाः | दम्भाहंकारसंयुक्ताः कामरागबलान्विताः ||१७-५||

aśāstravihitaṃ ghoraṃ tapyante ye tapo janāḥ . dambhāhaṃkārasaṃyuktāḥ kāmarāgabalānvitāḥ ||17-5||

17.5 Those men who practise terrific austerities not enjoined by the scriptures, given to hypocrisy and egoism, impelled by the force of lust and attachment.

कर्षयन्तः शरीरस्थं भूतग्राममचेतसः | मां चैवान्तःशरीरस्थं तान्विद्ध्यासुरनिश्चयान् ||१७-६||

karṣayantaḥ śarīrasthaṃ bhūtagrāmamacetasaḥ . māṃ caivāntaḥśarīrasthaṃ tānviddhyāsuraniścayān ||17-6||

17.6 Senseless, torturing all the elements in the body and Me also, Who dwell in the body, know thou these to be of demonical resolves.
