Chapter 16, Verse 14

असौ मया हतः शत्रुर्हनिष्ये चापरानपि | ईश्वरोऽहमहं भोगी सिद्धोऽहं बलवान्सुखी ||१६-१४||

asau mayā hataḥ śatrurhaniṣye cāparānapi . īśvaro.ahamahaṃ bhogī siddho.ahaṃ balavānsukhī ||16-14||

16.14 "That enemy has been slain by me; and others also I shall slay. I am the lord. I enjoy. I am perfect, powerful and happy."

Explanation & Commentary

The inner monologue swells from acquisition into delusions of grandeur. 'That foe I have destroyed, and I will destroy the rest' — violence is recounted as triumph. Then comes the crowning blasphemy: ishvaro 'ham — 'I am the lord.' The ego, intoxicated by success, usurps the place of the Divine and crowns itself master, enjoyer, perfected, powerful, and happy.

Krishna exposes here the deepest distortion of the demoniac nature: the self-deification of the ego. Earlier chapters revealed that the true Ishvara dwells within all beings; the asura inverts this truth, claiming lordship for the small separate self while denying it to the whole. Such a person is not happy but merely insists he is. This is the climax of the lower nature — not mere wickedness, but a fundamental forgetting of who and what we truly are, the finite mistaking itself for the infinite.

16.6 There are two types of beings in this world, the divine and the demoniacal; the divine has been described at length; hear from Me, O Arjuna, of the demoniacal.

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च जना न विदुरासुराः | न शौचं नापि चाचारो न सत्यं तेषु विद्यते ||१६-७||

pravṛttiṃ ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidurāsurāḥ . na śaucaṃ nāpi cācāro na satyaṃ teṣu vidyate ||16-7||

16.7 The demoniacal know not what to do and what to refrain from; neither purity, nor right conduct nor truth is found in them.
