Chapter 13, Verse 12

अध्यात्मज्ञाननित्यत्वं तत्त्वज्ञानार्थदर्शनम् | एतज्ज्ञानमिति प्रोक्तमज्ञानं यदतोऽन्यथा ||१३-१२||

13.12 Constancy in Self-knowledge, perception of the end of true knowledge this is declared to be knowledge, and what is opposed to it is ignorance.

Explanation & Commentary

Krishna seals the long list of virtues with its purpose: constancy in Self-knowledge (adhyatma-jnana-nityatva) and keeping the goal of all wisdom steadily in view (tattva-jnanartha-darshana). The qualities just enumerated — humility, harmlessness, detachment, devotion — are not ends in themselves but supports that keep the mind anchored in the abiding remembrance of the true Self.

Then comes a bracing definition: all this, taken together, is what is truly called knowledge; everything contrary to it is ignorance (ajnana). Krishna thereby redefines intelligence. A person may be vastly learned yet, lacking these qualities, remain in ignorance; another, simpler in book-learning but rich in humility and devotion, possesses real wisdom. Knowledge is measured by whether it brings us nearer to the Self and to truth. This verse invites honest self-examination: is my learning drawing me toward clarity and peace, or merely inflating the ego?

13.2 The Blessed Lord said This body, O Arjuna, is called the field; he who knows it is called the knower of the field, by those who know of them.

तत्क्षेत्रं यच्च यादृक्च यद्विकारि यतश्च यत् | स च यो यत्प्रभावश्च तत्समासेन मे शृणु ||१३-४||

tatkṣetraṃ yacca yādṛkca yadvikāri yataśca yat . sa ca yo yatprabhāvaśca tatsamāsena me śṛṇu ||13-4||

13.4 What the field is and of what nature, what are its modifications and whence it is and also who He is and what His powers are hear all that from Me in brief.
